William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and Internet technologies for personal and business computing. Microsoft employs more than 50,000 people in 78 countries and regions. Bill Gates was born in 1955. Gates grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. His father has been a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. Gates attended public elementary school and the private Lakeside School. There, he discovered his interest in software and began programming computers at the age of 13. His first program was the game tic tac toe. In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University, where he shared a room with Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft’s chief executive officer. While he was going to the Harvard University, he developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer – the MITS Altair. In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Gates’ foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. Under Gates’ leadership, Microsoft has advanced and improved software technology, and has made it easier, cheaper and more enjoyable for people to use computers. Bill Gates got married in 1993 and he has 3 children. Gates enjoys playing golf and bridge. Today he is the richest man in the world. I think he is a great man because he has influenced the 20th century more than any other person.
